Hammer And Nail Pop-Up Film Festival

MYSTERY, comedy and an out-of-control computer game are all on the bill as the Handyman Supermarket’s Hammer and Nail Pop-Up Film Festival is announced.

Running over the weekend May 6th and 7th at the former cinema and DIY store on Smithdown Road in Wavertree the events are part of a series of pop-up happens at the space before the launch of a microbrewery later in the year.

With just 50 seats for each screening the aim is to create intimate events at the heart of the Wavertree community with volunteers from the area.

Saturday May 6th at 7.30pm will feature a screening of Withnail & I, the classic British cult comedy starring Liverpool-born Paul McGann and celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The film tells the story of two out of luck alcoholic actors and their terrible attempts to enjoy a trip away to the countryside.

Sunday May 7th at 2pm will be a family-friendly event. At 2pm there are activities for Children to do some DIY creations of their own before Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph at 3pm. The film tells the story of Ralph a computer game character who’s a baddie but want to be the hero. The destructive handyman ends up needing to be a hero to save everybody in the arcade they all live in. All are welcome.

Sunday May 7th at 6pm, it’s the turn of a Hammer Horror classic with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing both starring in the brilliant, atmospheric horror mystery The Hound Of The Baskervilles. Sherlock Holmes is dragged into an intriguing and violent investigation with something decidedly dangerous lurking on the moors.

All tickets are £5 and £4 concessions with any money raised from sales going to pay for more pop-up events.

The festival is the work of Empty Spaces Cinema, a new group consisting of some volunteers from Liverpool Small Cinema who are looking to open pop-up cinema events in unusual locations across Merseyside.

Christopher Brown from Empty Spaces said: “We’re really excited to be bringing these fantastic films to this well-known Wavertree location. We’ve picked three films that reflect such an unusual space. Well before the DIY store was there it was a 300 seat cinema back in 1911 called the Sefton Park Picturedrome. It’s a fantastic fit and a lovely space, so these movies will offer a unique experience in one of the South Liverpool’s most recognisable buildings.”

The Handyman Supermarket project is being brought to life by Architectural Emporium Ltd.

Andrew James from the company said: “The long-term use of the venue will be more than a pub & brewery. Through the thoughtful curation of the rear room we hope the building will become a multifunctional cultural space for South Liverpool. It is important for the temporary uses to reflect this and we are incredibly excited that Empty Spaces are helping us make this a reality.”
